Time for Kitchen Design

Most have seen those "to die for" kitchens showcased in magazines like Country Kitchen Ideas, Kitchen & Bath Showcase and Kitchen Design. You know, the ones with the glitzy galley kitchen or the more traditional granite counters, wainscot and tile backsplash surrounded by cherry cabinets and elaborate cooking stations--all beautifully lit with recessed ceiling and under-cabinet lighting.

Some of those showpiece kitchens can be found right here in mid-Michigan, designed by Dave Hagerman, owner of Hagerman Kitchens, Inc. in Lansing.Open kitchens are very much in style, he adds. Hagerman's clients want to be able to cook, entertain and eat in one centralized location.www.hagermankitchens.comThe design process begins when Hagerman meets with potential clients to start discussing and drawing plans. He uses several computer-aided drafting and design programs, including Squiggle(R) and Google'sTM SketchUp(R), to create 3D models.Hagerman's knowledge of architecture is evident in his designs, but it's the functionality and versatility of his contemporary and traditional kitchens that are the hallmarks of his style."The Food Network has inspired a lot of people with great ideas, but it's important that a kitchen designer understands the work flow of a kitchen, such as moving from the dishwasher to the cabinets to the food prep areas. Convenience is important," Hagerman says.LansingHe adds that good architecture remains long after fads come and go. "It's important for designs have real character and interest."Granite remains the most popular countertop material, and the thicker the better, he says, with some clients asking for two-inch thick tops. Marble isn't as popular since it requires too much maintenance for most of his clients; it's also prone to nicks and scratches."I loved studying blueprints. I think that is where I began to enjoy the drawing and design part of the process, and developing my interior design skills," Hagerman says. "Learning how to build cabinets as a young man helped me understand how everything fits together.""With SketchUp(R) you can literally walk right through the new design, open the drawers and sit at the island," he says.517-882-2599David Hagerman, OwnerTraditional kitchen design is still the top pick of homeowners across mid-Michigan, Hagerman says, with cherry cabinets and granite countertops all the rage. However, maple has made a resurgence because it can be painted either cream or beige.Hagerman, who works by himself, launched his own private label line of cabinetry three years ago. That allows him to add special custom details not always available from the other name brand lines of cabinets he sells. He uses a cabinetmaker in the Detroit area, familiar with his architectural style, to produce his custom cabinets."We are also doing more with glass, which you can do a lot of fun things with. We use it on a lot of bar tops. It gives you the illusion there's nothing there because you can see right through it," Hagerman says. His quarter of a century of experience designing kitchens has taught Hagerman there will always be crooked walls and uneven floors to deal with on site, and even more importantly, homeowners who are prone to over-estimating their budget."Fortunately our workload has been very steady. Obviously there has been a shift to remodel projects away from new home installations, but a particular strength for us has been the northern Michigan vacation home market," Hagerman says.Once the design plans are approved, Hagerman advises clients to hire a general contractor to supervise the day-to-day construction activities. He also recommends clients hire subcontractors that are familiar with his designs.Hagerman Kitchens, Inc.Hagerman, a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), founded his company in 1993. Over the years his designs have won national awards and garnered attention from professional publications. He's attracted clients like Jeff Smith, of the Frugal Gourmet, whose career on public television ended in the 1990s. He even once redesigned the kitchen in the governor's residence for the State of Michigan."They know how the trim works and how we like the electrical. They are just accustomed to how our kitchen designs go together," Hagerman adds."People love traditional but with some embellishments. Across the rest of the state we are seeing more of a refined traditional with some contemporary design work. It's a softer look with less of a high tech feel," Hagerman says."Designing with a budget in mind, whatever that budget may be, that is really the starting point. I always speak with my clients about what they want and then whether the budget is compatible with it."Hagerman Kitchens also offers custom crafted furniture.4500 Alpha St.Hagerman, the son of a carpenter, gained experience by working at a variety of job sites many summer days with his father. It was on those projects that he fashioned the start of his career by drawing remodeling jobs.

Garden Seats Are Fantastic For Decorating Your Garden

Garden seats aren't merely a sensible inclusion for the backyard, but they have in actual fact develop into popular features of your garden dcor. Although swing chairs are extremely well-liked for porches and patios, a garden seat which often can take the form of a backyard bench, kneeler, small table or padded planter are generating quite a splash in the garden.

Let go of Preconceived IdeasMove the Stairs and Get Rid of the Fireplaces

Make sure you look for all reviews on the goods that you are looking at to make certain the standard of production is as good as the images depict. While these products are less space-consuming than other outdoor seating options and much more flexible, you might wish to purchase some small eye-catching cushions to improve their level of comfort and bring that little something special that each garden deserves.

Remodeling your Entire House

Many times it's possible to rearrange spaces within an existing house and make it work so much better than before. By opening up floor plans, moving stairs, even moving bedrooms and living spaces, it's possible to create a plan that is appropriate for today's living. Here are some things to consider:

Get Rid of HallwaysIt seems more often than not that stairs and fireplaces are just in the wrong spot. Stairs are often too tight and dangerous to navigate. By moving the stair, it can often be designed to better connect different floor levels and also be a more comfortable dimension to make the stair safer to use.A whole house remodel is an exciting project to undertake because the result is often a new, fresh design that doesn't have any resemblance to the old design. By making bold design moves, rearranging spaces, and upgrading and renewing materials, an old house can be given new purpose and extend its useful life many years.Don't Forget the OutsideOne of the most preferred seat models available on the internet include the Moroccan Style Garden Seat which is sold for $590 inclusive of free shipping. In the event that your backyard isn't that decorative, you could potentially choose something a tad bit more duel functional like the Garden Seat that may also be used as a low table and is available in a beautiful rattan material. This style retails for about $250.A large portion of a whole house remodel is new finishes. Consider green materials such as low VOC paints, sustainably harvested wood floors, natural carpets, and other materials that do not off-gas. Use the remodel as an opportunity to incorporate as many green materials as possible. This will result in a better interior living environment with less chemicals off-gassing, and it is better overall for the environment.Make sure you look for all reviews on the goods that you are looking at to make certain the standard of production is as good as the images depict. While these products are less space-consuming than other outdoor seating options and much more flexible, you might wish to purchase some small eye-catching cushions to improve their level of comfort and bring that little something special that each garden deserves. While the interior of many homes needs a major overhaul, often the exterior does as well. Consider new paint colors, new windows, doors, roof, and siding. When adding new doors and windows, don't be constrained by existing openings. It can be easy to lower sill heights or even add french doors where a window was once located. Also consider adding architectural features such as dormers or an interesting entry canopy.Old masonry fireplaces are often located where it would be much nicer to have large windows or french doors to the outside. Or they are just much more massive than they need to be, taking up valuable floor space. With the advent of modern prefabricated metal fireplaces, it's possible to remove an old masonry fireplace, and replace it (possibly in a new location) with a smaller and more efficient unit.Consider Green MaterialsA garden swing is definitely an desirable choice for just about any garden, especially should you have young children. Swings are a blast, can be romatantic and a fantastic way to just relax after having a long day, but they are generally quite challenging to safely move and do not always make the most flexible seating solution. Backyard benches and garden steamers are good for providing seating for more than just one and will add a little bit more towards the beauty of the garden, nonetheless it is the simple garden seat that's the most flexible item of patio furniture that one could buy.

A whole house remodel is an exciting project to undertake because the result is often a new, fresh design that doesn't have any resemblance to the old design. By making bold design moves, rearranging spaces, and upgrading and renewing materials, an old house can be given new purpose and extend its useful life many years.

Designing With Mirrors

Sometimes the simplest changes can create the greatest impact in your home - and adding mirrors to your design scheme is one of them. I'm not just referring to wall hung mirrors - although they are always beautiful - but introducing strategically placed mirrored surfaces in your foyer, kitchen, bath, living room, dining room or bedroom. Reflective surfaces brighten a space and create that extra layer of sparkle and texture, at the same time visually increasing a sense of space. Here are some stunning ideas for adding that spectacular look to your room.

Kitchens. Add some instant light and reflection in your kitchen with a mirrored backsplash. Do you have a killer view of the ocean or a spectacular English garden? What better way than to highlight it and integrate the interior with the exterior for a panoramic view. For added texture apply either glass or mirrored mosaic tiles to the backsplash and you'll still achieve that shimmer and shine.Living Rooms. In a more traditional home, apply mirrored sections on the walls within framed moldings and paneling for a crisp classic style - enhancing your furniture and creating a bright beautiful space. For a more contemporary flair introduce a crisp and cool fireplace surround to double the glow of the fire when lit. Beveled mirrors or tiles with glass rosette insets provide for a more traditional style. Free standing glass screens will definitely add some drama along with a mirror mounted over a mirrored surface to provide you with a greater sense of detail and depth.Foyers. Mirroring the adjacent wall to the entry with a large over-sized frame will transform a dark and dingy foyer into a bright and spectacular space. Or take it a step further and adhere some beveled-mirrored tiles to the entire wall with a beautiful glass chandelier suspended from above. If large mirrors aren't for you then consider a mirrored chest at the entry with your favorite piece of art above highlighted with a crystal or glass table lamp and finished with an exquisite arrangement of fresh flowers.Bathrooms. The use of multiple mirrored surfaces will open up a small space and create a sense of elegance and glamour. Consider mirroring the entire wall from the top of the countertop material all the way to the ceiling. It will visually double the size of a smaller bathroom and reflect the natural light. A mirror placed across from the bathroom window also adds depth to the room. Reflective backsplashes will also create a similar effect.Incorporating mirrors into your interior design plans is an easy way to add light, space and airiness to your room . For larger rooms, it adds a new dimension to the space. Play around with different mirror shapes and reflective surfaces. I know you'll find the perfect solution to spicing up the ambiance of every room in your house.

Mr. & Mrs. DIY - Through the Thick and Thin of Building a Concrete Countertop

Concrete countertops, recognized first by architects and designers for their aesthetic potential and project versatility, are fast becoming the answer to homeowners demands for a relatively inexpensive countertop alternative that doesnt require a high-level of expertise to install. In addition, they offer homeowners an exciting opportunity to literally try their hands at being creative. Step-by-step books, videos and hands-on training are now readily available for homeowners to confidently engage in such do-it-yourself (DIY) projects as building concrete countertops.

We both enjoy the process of designing and creating our own living space to fit how we live. This applies to the space we occupy as well as the details within it, says Ali. We both like the idea of working with our hands, using materials that are natural, accessible [] and flexible. Chris added, Concrete counters are beautiful, cool, earthy, solid, and you just want to touch them. The counters were a perfect way for us to create something beautiful out of our own ideas and hard work, and the uniqueness of the end product is a representation of our unique ideas.Their kitchen, 10 feet wide by 15 feet long (150 sq. ft.), didnt offer much room for Chris and Ali to work but that didnt stop the big plans they had for their narrow kitchen. They wanted to have a logical cooking zone with a work triangle, plenty of counter space and still have enough room to accommodate a dining area.Understated design details of the 12-foot long, 3-inch thick concrete countertop include rounded edges at the countertop front and the sink openings as well as a decorative metal strip under the front edge of the countertop to conceal the plywood sub-top.The finished countertop is a visually stunning work surface with rich, complex colors: reddish-brown with flecks of semi-precious Leopardskin (yellow and black) aggregates. This particular color combination blended perfectly with the color theme we had for the cabinetry, tile backsplash, floor and wall finishes, says Ali.With the completion of the project and the creative work done, Chris and Ali admit that their biggest challenge was building the concrete forms. Particularly for the sink cut-out, which has radius corners and two different size basins, says Chris. In April of 2003, Chris and Ali purchased a two-flat building in space-challenged San Francisco. Recently, they sold the lower flat as a tenant-in-common unit and now occupy the upper flat, which offers roughly 950 sq. ft. of living space. Before they considered building their own kitchen concrete countertop, they hired a contractor for an extensive remodel of the home. The result is an open, loft-like living space where the kitchen and living zones flow together.Like most urban San Francisco properties, space is almost always an issue. To remedy this, a straight run of upper and lower cabinets and a concrete countertop with a dishwasher, sink, oven and stove were placed along one wall of the kitchen. A built-in banquette and dining table are located opposite the concrete countertop work area. An adjacent wall hosts a refrigerator and tall cabinets.Chris and Ali took special note that despite the tight working space of their basement, their collaborative work ran smoothly from pour to finish. Like the rest of our remodeling project, building the concrete countertop brought us closer together, says Chris. We work very well together. It starts from the fact that we communicate very well and our design ideas complement each other.Despite a couple of minor learning curves, Chris maintains that there is an overwhelming sense of accomplishment upon completing their concrete countertop. The best part is seeing and feeling the finished product and knowing we did it! Its been said that if a couple can survive a home remodel especially a DIY project together, they can survive anything. From the looks of a job well done on their first concrete countertop, these happy do-it-yourselfers are in it for the long haul. Chris says of future projects, We plan to create a concrete fireplace surround and perhaps a hearth to go with it!Married couple Chris and Ali were excited to take on a DIY project after purchasing their San Francisco flat. A logistical real estate developer/construction manager and an educational specialist, Chris and Ali are also architecture and home design enthusiasts. With a penchant for getting their hands dirty, building and installing their own concrete countertop seemed a natural choice for them.Chris happens to be no stranger to concrete: My interest goes back several years when I was building restaurants and retail spaces. I installed concrete countertops and worked with concrete artisans doing integral color and stained concrete floors.

From the looks of a job well done on their first concrete countertop, these happy do-it-yourselfers are in it for the long haul. Chris says of future projects, We plan to create a concrete fireplace surround and perhaps a hearth to go with it!

Lighting up Your Life

You are visiting a friend that has just had a beautiful kitchen remodel done. It is a lovely kitchen with stunning granite countertops and a sharp looking tile backsplash. The glass door cabinets are filled with the good china. Somehow after spending a small fortune the room still looks a bit drab.

3. Inset "panels" into the front face of the countertop to reflect the cabinet doors. These panels would be no deeper than 3/8" and would measure approximately 1/3" to the height of the front face, orSo many times people spend a wad of money renovating a room and neglect to take the lighting into consideration. Properly placed lighting of the correct type can literally make or break a room. That tile backsplash can be brought to life with some low voltage linear lighting. The china in those glass door cabinets can really show itself off with some puck lights and glass shelves.5. Mosaic tiles in groups of four separated by 1/8"-1/4" spacing could be placed on the countertop surface as inlaid "trivets" next to the stove burners. (In the mold, they would be placed face down on the bottom of the form.)

When you carefully plan that next renovation project or new home be sure the lighting is well planned out as well.

How to Use Decorative Concrete in a Traditional Kitchen

Concrete's use in kitchens and bathrooms may still be considered relatively "modern" design-wise by the standard homeowner. But while concrete can be used to create a modern or minimal look, it's also perfectly adaptable to a more traditional setting where it was so extensively used in the first place.

Recessed lighting and a combination of switching options can give a room many personalities to suit any mood. From bright light for working conditions to subtle lighting for a romantic setting can all be accomplished with switches and dimmers. Accent lighting to highlight certain aspects of a project that were carefully planned but would barely be noticed otherwise. Cove lighting above crown moldings helps focus attention to the detail of the room.Builder: Madden Corp., Rockville, Md.; Architect: KUBE Architecture, Washington, D.C.; Photographer: Alan Karchmer. * Resources: Cabinets: Burger Custom Cabinets, Circle 175; Countertops: Concrete Jungle, Circle 176; Dishwasher/oven: KitchenAid, Circle 177; interior doors: Raydoor, Circle 178; Kitchen fittings/fixtures: Grohe, Circle 179; Lighting: Illuminations Inc., Circle 180 and W.A.C. Recess the appropriately sized or proportioned ceramic tiles with some embossing on them into the face of the countertop or into a cast backsplash. Allow the recess to be at least 1/4" in depth.A cooking area to the left as you enter the kitchen now occupies the former powder room, which was moved to the stair landing. At the far end is a square bar sink and compact computer space with a fiat-screen monitor mounted beneath wall cabinets. And an existing 4-foot-by-4-foot pantry is hidden behind a full-height cabinetry door. "We wanted to keep everything very flush to make it look neat and clean, which is what the clients wanted," Bloomberg says. The result is an unabashedly 21st-century work space, one with enough texture and warmth to span two time periods.--Cheryl WeberLets take a turn-of-century "Craftsman" style kitchen for a hypothetical example. The cabinets would most likely be frame-and-panel with flush inlay doorframes. There would be wood wainscoting in the dining area and perhaps tile around a single porcelain sink. The lighting fixtures might have beveled glass or echoes of Tiffany lamps. What concrete application would be appropriate in this situation? I would look into one or more of the following ideas in combination:2. Keep the front face, or thickness, of the countertop at a minimum of 2-1/2" up to 5".A California cottage we renovated recently moved from "traditional" to "transitional". A large concrete curved wall/counter boldly separates the living room from the kitchen. Meanwhile, a stainless steel integral sink countertop straddles one wall yet, by inlaying glass tiles into the backsplash and inserting a traditional plate holder in the cabinetry, enough balance is achieved to avoid a conflict of styles. The new plan replaces the opening between the kitchen and dining room with a sweep of floor-to-ceiling translucent pocket doors. Bloomberg centered a large window and sink on the opening to share light between the rooms. "The doors tie the two sides together," Bloomberg says. "We also used very warm materials, which help to carry through the palette of an older house." Stylistic differences are neutralized with cherry cabinets that complement the house's pine floors, Italian slate flooring with rich color variations, and a concrete countertop.Concrete can act as a substitute for more traditional materials. Rather than just using concrete to explicitly re-create something from the past, you can also combine it with other elements to suggest a timeless quality. In my work, I always strive to strike a balance between innovation and emotion, between spare contemporary and warm traditional. Adding mosaic tile along the front edge of a concrete surface, inlaying bits of tile along a backsplash, or even embedding a fossil in a countertop all connect us to the past.1. Choose an earth tone color or natural gray. No bright colors.

As they say, it's all in the details.

Clean sweep

With its strong horizontal lines and clean details, the 18-foot-long kitchen in a renovated Washington, D.C., row house is minimalist without appearing ultramodern. Even a backsplash was deemed gratuitous; the aluminum window sits right on the countertop, which in turn slips between cabinetry under the microwave. "We liked the idea of the horizontal plane of counter not being stopped and connecting to the outside," architect Janet Bloomberg says.

When you carefully plan that next renovation project or new home be sure the lighting is well planned out as well. Now I wouldn't want to use all of the above accents just enough to carry a complementary flavor to the Craftsman look and feel. The concrete itself is earthy enough to carry that load. It's up to you as a homeowner or designer to add the touch that personalizes and enhances the piece. In some cases, for instance, the overwrought "traditional English manor" kitchen, usually full of elaborate detailing, can use a touch of restraint the concrete counter with a simple ogee edge detail and a complementary white porcelain farm sink might just be perfect.

RESPONSE 2In my case, I must say that the best friend is lovely. She asks questions, gives her opinion, but her "way" is very sensitive to both me and her friend. My vibe toward her has always been very welcoming, so maybe that has made a slight difference. If your vibe is somewhat negative, that could make a difference in your case, so I'd look at that as a possible contentious situation. In my opinion, it seems to benefit everyone because the customer gets a better price, the showroom sells tile and we are not responsible for any tile ordering! With exterior decorative concrete applications, especially in Utah, you have to think about snow removal. When a driveway is colored and stamped to look like stone, it is harder to maintain. More care must be taken when shoveling to avoid chipping the edges of the patterns. It helps if the color is continuous within the slab, rather than an overlay, which will expose a different surface beneath if it separates. In terms of remodeling, replacing existing floors with concrete is generally not an option because of the weight and depth of a new concrete slab. Concrete can be used in a new addition (where the floor is a new concrete slab on grade or ground level) or when a concrete basement floor is removed so it can be lowered and replaced. Options to use concrete as countertops or in other limited decorative applications in a remodel are much broader.Have a question and looking for feedback from industry peers? * Broken or abandoned china: Even if it is no longer of service on the table, china can become a serviceable and spunky mosaic backsplash.-MCRThere seems to be little room to mark up tile given the small discounts offered by most high-end manufacturers. Right now, if someone contracts for cabinets, I will do a backsplash design and mark up the tile to list price. Even then, there is so much room for error and little profit potential at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas in regard to this situation? Also, concrete is porous, so if you choose a concrete countertop or floor, make sure you have the right sealant to discourage stains. Concrete floors can also be cold and must be insulated so as not to transfer the cold from the ground into the slab. Designs can be quite time consuming, and you need to be paid for the work you are putting in!8 Fresh Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes-crazycabsKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In honor of Kitchen and Bath Month this October, broadband channel HGTV KitchenDesign announces the launch of its first two exclusive Web video series devoted to the kitchen - "8 Fresh Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes" and "Getting Started - 10 Steps to a New Kitchen." They can make concrete any color you want and make it resemble any pattern you want -- from stone to slate to wood. Most concrete countertops are custom made and can cost anywhere from $45 to $225 per square foot. Although it is more expensive than other options, such as granite or tile, decorative concrete can be a beautiful option for your home whether applied inside or out. What is the best way to advertise and sell a showroom display that you need to switch out?Part of me feels that the closet will be easier to sell since people don't really need more stuff.BACKSPLASH COSTSIn "Getting Started - 10 Steps to a New Kitchen," host Lise Simms offers a beginner's guide to kitchen remodeling, with easy tips that help inexperienced homeowners make their kitchen the heart of the home. Each Webisode concentrates on one of the 10 steps:-KarH-jelkelkitchenI, too, have been in a similar situation! As tactfully as you can, you need to ask the client who will be living and working in this kitchen. How does "she" cook, wash, clean and use her kitchen? Ultimately, this can lead to a better overall relationship.Another reason why we like this setup is because there is not much money in tile, and this way our customers are happy and we still maintain control over the project. In addition to that, we don't have to spend precious hours worrying about designing the perfect tile backsplash. The dynamic Web sites created and supported by Scripps Networks Interactive attracted an average of more than 12 million unique visitors per month in 2005, a growth of nearly 30 percent from the previous year. The Scripps Networks Interactive Web sites - www.HGTV.com, www.FoodNetwork.com, www.DIYnetwork.com, www.FineLiving.com and www.GACTV.com - along with broadband channels - HGTV Pro, HGTV KitchenDesign, HGTV BathDesign and DIY Woodworking - are not only extensions of Scripps Networks leading lifestyle brands, providing users programming information and additional instructional content, but also exciting destinations for original content, engaging video and powerful interactive tools.I have worked for design/build companies that have charged [quite a bit] for the tile and labor. The final cost was somewhere between $750 and $1,000, but this was for very small kitchens. It is bothering me because I feel like I am being undermined. Near the end of the last meeting the friend asked me, "How long have you been doing this?" She had her eyebrows raised. My credentials and portfolio were presented at the first meeting so I have to feel it was a jab. Midway through the meeting, she said to the homeowner, "I thought you were going to do this and I thought you were going to do that," and I said, "And just where are you getting the space to put all of those cabinets?"QUESTION-susan27One interior trend is to extend the exterior walkway into the foyer or entry of the home, creating a smooth and seamless transition from outside to inside. When used in a transition from an interior space to a back patio, decorative concrete ties the two spaces together and complements outside living spaces.10. The Right Light Makes it CompleteCLIENT RELATIONS3. Choose a ContractorWe are selling one of our kitchen displays. I just put a sign there with the retail price so that people can see the difference. Some people get intrigued by that approach. The problem is that the display may not fit into their home. Beyond that, once they get a price for the add-on items, they may lose their interest. Can anyone offer any advice on how to handle this situation? I think that I am pretty diplomatic, but I am also feeling really uncomfortable and a little troubled about this scenario. Thanks for any insight you can provide to me.-susanckdMoving from driveways, walkways and pool decks, this chic trend has found its way inside -- through the entryway and into family and dining rooms, bathrooms and kitchen and utility areas, not to mention fireplaces, countertops and backsplashes. One of the most common decorative concrete techniques is stamped concrete. Stamped concrete is a technique applied to new concrete where rubber molds are pressed into the surface of the concrete before it sets up. Concrete can also be colored by adding pigment when the cement, sand and water are mixed. Because this is not an exact science, it is best to make sure the entire area is poured at the same time to ensure the color is consistent.9. Sinks with Style and UtilityIt is a closet system if that makes any difference. Any ideas that you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.I think you're working with one of my clients! In my case, it is the same thing. Her best friend is in on every single decision, no matter how large or how small. I even printed a set of plans for her and she was there at the contract signing (however I didn't give her a copy of the contract). I have had all the same thoughts as you are having about your situation.Whenever you work with concrete you have to understand that it is going to crack. That is why control joints are placed in a slab, which encourage floors to crack we want them to crack. Even with the control joints, however, the floor may crack. You have to be willing to take the cracks as they come and see it as part of concrete's character.-jengI think you may have a tougher road than I did. I can be a bit confrontational. I think I would ask why she said something derogatory, in a curious, but respectful way, and if there are any issues she is uncomfortable about regarding the process. Others would advise not to speak up, but if I were constantly berated, I think I'd speak up. I hope that doesn't happen and that it's just an isolated incident.4. Create an Efficient LayoutI have on occasion asked the client, privately on the phone, how much involvement she wants her friend to have. You can be direct, but respectful, but also inquisitive so you understand the dynamics. There is nothing wrong with that approach and your client will appreciate it. Just tell her that you want to understand what she wants for her project.* Household objects: A 3-D collage made with favorite objects such as silverware and shells can create a multi-dimensional backsplash that has individuality and flair.

Part of me feels that the closet will be easier to sell since people don't really need more stuff.

Some concrete ideas for home remodeling

Who would have thought to use a sidewalk as a kitchen countertop? Well, someone did, because the once drab, gray concrete is now an artistic upscale trend in home design.

At least the second decision-maker is there with you two. I have, on several occasions, had to ask a client to bring in the third party - as in, if this person is going to be at the table (and have influence on the decisions made), so to speak, then he or she had better be at the table participating in the process, rather than second guessing us later.-sks05While using decorative concrete inside a home may result in the interior look you seek, it has some disadvantages you should consider: A room with concrete floors can be noisy. Concrete counters are unforgiving when you drop something, and concrete floors can be uncomfortable if you are standing for a long time.RESPONSE 1Since removing an existing concrete slab is a messy and labor- intensive proposition, rather than removing the slab and starting over, it is possible to transform existing concrete by applying an overlay. This overlay is a cement material placed over the existing concrete about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick. The overlay can then be stamped, etched and/or stained to create the look you want."8 Fresh Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes" features fresh and funky ideas from celebrity designer Scott Sicari to update this kitchen mainstay. "Backsplashes" has consistently ranked among the top search terms since HGTV KitchenDesign launched in January 2006. The eight Webisodes include using innovative materials such as:I have met with a new client three times. She has paid me a retainer to design her kitchen, and each time I meet with her in her home, her best friend is at the meeting. Sometimes she even answers the questions I ask that are directed specifically to the homeowner!Decorative concrete is a trend that started more than a decade ago in California and has spread in popularity across the country. Although it has been around for a while now, it is still expensive and considered a high-end option. Prices are determined by the size of the job and the artistic method requested, but costs can range anywhere from $1 to $20 a square foot. Polishing and acid-staining the existing concrete is typically on the low end while stamping overlays and other decorative resurfacing is on the high-end.If you want it, I suggest that you take it!2. Plan Your BudgetThere is a situation that has developed that I would appreciate some insight on from fellow designers.Getting Started - 10 Steps to a New Kitchen

Remodeling Your Home On A Budget

If you've lived in your home any length of time, you probably have considered doing some remodeling. In fact, the National Association of Home Builders estimates that we will spend nearly $240 billion over the next year in remodeling projects. That's a lot of paint (not to mention nails, screws, plywood, tile, etc.)!

3. Go outside. A new barbecue grill can liven up the forgotten square footage of your home."We are also doing more with glass, which you can do a lot of fun things with. We use it on a lot of bar tops. It gives you the illusion there's nothing there because you can see right through it," Hagerman says.Traditional kitchen design is still the top pick of homeowners across mid-Michigan, Hagerman says, with cherry cabinets and granite countertops all the rage. However, maple has made a resurgence because it can be painted either cream or beige."The Food Network has inspired a lot of people with great ideas, but it's important that a kitchen designer understands the work flow of a kitchen, such as moving from the dishwasher to the cabinets to the food prep areas. Convenience is important," Hagerman says. While the economy has certainly slowed down new home construction across mid-Michigan, Hagerman says people are excitedly tackling smaller remodel projects--and the kitchen is typically a good place to start. These are just a few of the many ideas which you can implement to give your home a remodeled look. By taking the time to visit a few of the local retailers (box stores and specialty stores), you can come up with some great ideas. Also, a visit to your local home show is a great source for generating ideas. And, more ideas can be found at http://www.fhhome.com.2. Add glass in the bathroom. It creates a look of more space by opening up the tub/shower area."Fortunately our workload has been very steady. Obviously there has been a shift to remodel projects away from new home installations, but a particular strength for us has been the northern Michigan vacation home market," Hagerman says.Granite remains the most popular countertop material, and the thicker the better, he says, with some clients asking for two-inch thick tops. Marble isn't as popular since it requires too much maintenance for most of his clients; it's also prone to nicks and scratches.

But if you are not a do-it-your-self type of person, consider hiring a contractor who specializes in small jobs. A good contractor can also be a great source for new ideas. Enjoy your newly remodeled home!

Hagerman, the son of a carpenter, gained experience by working at a variety of job sites many summer days with his father. It was on those projects that he fashioned the start of his career by drawing remodeling jobs.4500 Alpha St.Hagerman's knowledge of architecture is evident in his designs, but it's the functionality and versatility of his contemporary and traditional kitchens that are the hallmarks of his style."With SketchUp(R) you can literally walk right through the new design, open the drawers and sit at the island," he says.A recent article published in PARADE suggested 5 quick, easy, and cheap ideas for giving your house that look of a major remodeling:5. Make-over you closets. Lots of kits and ideas are available at your local retailer. His quarter of a century of experience designing kitchens has taught Hagerman there will always be crooked walls and uneven floors to deal with on site, and even more importantly, homeowners who are prone to over-estimating their budget.Hagerman Kitchens, Inc."Designing with a budget in mind, whatever that budget may be, that is really the starting point. I always speak with my clients about what they want and then whether the budget is compatible with it."LansingDavid Hagerman, Owner"People love traditional but with some embellishments. Across the rest of the state we are seeing more of a refined traditional with some contemporary design work. It's a softer look with less of a high tech feel," Hagerman says.He adds that good architecture remains long after fads come and go. "It's important for designs have real character and interest."Draw the bath and enjoy the modern luxuries of your new space.Once the design plans are approved, Hagerman advises clients to hire a general contractor to supervise the day-to-day construction activities. He also recommends clients hire subcontractors that are familiar with his designs."They know how the trim works and how we like the electrical. They are just accustomed to how our kitchen designs go together," Hagerman adds.3. Surfaces and Materials - Utilize solid surfaces for countertops, whether quartz, limestone, granite, concrete or glass to give it a clean contemporary look. Keep the edges simple and square for easy maintenance and sophisticated style. - Always introduce an interesting backsplash material in contrast to the counter top color and material. Whatever the surface I like to apply it on all walls from floor to ceiling. It creates instant architecture and adds great detail and drama to the space. - Glass tile, mosaic, stone or ceramic details are just a few of the highly decorative backsplash products out on the market today that create a sense of modern style. - Keep geometry in mind when selecting the material for your contemporary backsplash. Consider tile shapes that are rectangular, oversized, or small mosaics to create detail in the pattern of the application. If the tile is oversized and rectilinear install it in a brick pattern. If it's shape is longer and thinner then s!Open kitchens are very much in style, he adds. Hagerman's clients want to be able to cook, entertain and eat in one centralized location.www.hagermankitchens.com4. Luxurious Shower - Create a steam shower with multiple rain heads, and body sprays. If your budget allows, add chromatherapy and aromatherapy to your master bath wish list as well. These fittings represent the epitome of modern luxury design. Don't forget a built in bench and access panel to hide the steam system. - Design a full seamless glass enclosure from floor to ceiling and finish the interior with complimentary mosaics or stone tile to set it apart from the rest of the space. This glass enclosure creates a more visually open space within the overall space. If you are considering selling your home, a minor remodeling job can be a great investment. While doing a major remodel might get you a small increase in your selling price, you definitely will get better value from a small job than from a major remodel. Remember, just because you like a peach colored paint in the kitchen, does not mean a prospective buyer will. If you do paint or add something else with color, stick with neutral tones and smaller jobs. You will get more bang for you buck.Hagerman, who works by himself, launched his own private label line of cabinetry three years ago. That allows him to add special custom details not always available from the other name brand lines of cabinets he sells. He uses a cabinetmaker in the Detroit area, familiar with his architectural style, to produce his custom cabinets.Hagerman Kitchens also offers custom crafted furniture.5. Accessories - Remember to keep clutter and display to a minimum. - Accessorize with towels in a bright color for punch or stainless steel and woods. Keep everything to a minimum and clutter free. - Select chrome, nickel or silver toned drawer/door pulls, towel bars, towel hooks and paper holders for sparkle. - Frame vanity mirrors in woods or silver tones - in similar finishes to the other accessories adorning your modern bath.1. Cabinetry - When it comes time to selecting the design of your cabinetry lean toward clean, crisp and streamlined furniture. - To create a lighter and sleek bathroom environment consider cantilevered cabinetry secured to the wall creating a minimal look to the vanity piece. Create some drama with strip lighting added to the bottom side of the cabinet - which will cast a warm glow to the floor below. - Provide additional built in wall-to-wall storage elsewhere in the bathroom to compensate for the reduced storage in the vanity area. - Deep dark rich woods evoke a sense of warmth to the clean lines of contemporary design.517-882-2599Some of those showpiece kitchens can be found right here in mid-Michigan, designed by Dave Hagerman, owner of Hagerman Kitchens, Inc. in Lansing.
